A Special Study: Injuries and Deaths Associated With Children's Playground Equipment by The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) concludes that “68 percent of the [playground related] injuries involved falls to the surface below the equipment.”

Playground Injuries Involving Falls

Overall, about 79 percent of the injuries that occurred on public equipment involved falls (Table A2). Specifically, 68 percent of the injuries involved falls to the surface below the equipment, 10 percent involved falls to other parts of the same equipment, and 1 percent involved falls to unidentified surfaces.

Fall-related injuries were most prevalent on climbers, accounting for 86 percent of the total injuries on these products (Table A1). About 80 percent of the injuries associated with swings involved falls, about 69 percent of the injuries associated with slides involved falls, and about 59 percent of the injuries associated with other types of equipment (i.e., see-saws, merry-go-rounds, and other combined) involved falls.

Product Information

KID-SAFE™ Playground Mulch is an all-natural product made from recycled hardwood. This product is not produced from pallet material, so it is free from chemicals and other contaminants that may be harmful to children. The recommended safe installation depth of KID-SAFE™ is 12”. Maintenance includes raking the material regularly and adding material as needed to meet the requirements for safe play.
